History

The hollow-mask illusion is an illusion related to reverse perspective; it has been known since the 14th Century.

The Reverse Perspective Illusion

"Reverse perspective"

is an unusual 3-D visual illusion that is both fun and profound. A brief history of this illusion, what is understood

about the psychological mechanisms underlying it, and some simple principles for its construction are

outlined here. The inventor and unrivalled master of reverse perspective

is the London artist, Patrick Hughes.

Psychology

The contradiction between "bottom-up" (motion parallax)

and "top-down" (pictorial depth cues) processes seems to be the source of the illusion.
